Right, relax at the wrong time could cost your life. Rock's don't move around too much....logs, another story. Once my Dad @ 70 years old, a very experienced guide, fisherman and hunter.....was...

Re: Phillips 66 SAE 30 oil

Right....can't speak for shelf life, but if you can still shake it up and see clear color and no separation, then it's probably still safe to use. Years back....in the 40's and 50's...2 stroke oil...

    Re: Orientation for connecting rods?

Seems, then, that the service manual is contradictory. Who wrote the manual? I have seen this before. Sometimes there is more than one author.

Re: Phillips 66 SAE 30 oil

Ha....sweet bike!!! I think this is only for 2 stroke to be used in combustion.....so mixed with the fuel.....in reality, it is darn good oil....I used it for years in snowmobiles, outboards, and...

Re: Phillips 66 SAE 30 oil

Yes I used it in both air and water cooled 2 strokes. Mixed at 40:1. I would sell them on eBay. Collectors like old unopened bottles....especially if it's in CANS. I sold a can a couple years back...

    Re: safe compression ratio sbc

So here's a guy with 12.4 thousand posts? Banned? I'm gonna start to cry. His time devoted to this forum has burned up almost a full half year of his life? So what if he doesn't like dished...
  8. Re: Can anyone comment on vintage and HP of this engine?

Sorry to say, but I don't have good feelings about the history of this motor. A picture can be worth a thousand words.

Yes....it was your other post. These lower units are hard to find in good shape.

Re: 1987 Evinrude 70HP VRO Bypass Questions

Yes, beauty is only skin deep. Goes for outboards, boats, cars,....especially women. I agree with Racer...I'm spooked a bit with custom paint jobs.

    Re: 1969 Mercury 40 4hp recoil starter

Bingo....good call Racer and Fitz. It might be okay, depending on how it looks and SHIFTS. Could be the leak just started and rust hasn't formed yet. I suggest remove lower unit, then water pump, and...

Never saw one for these but maybe someone extremely clever, could rig something up.
  15. Re: Can anyone comment on vintage and HP of this engine?

Certainly you know as much as me that the small bolts/slotted cap screws come loose under the throttle twist grip, then the indicator band binds and gets broken and falls off......next some operator...
  16. Re: Can anyone comment on vintage and HP of this engine?

Hose clamp on tiller for starters....gotta read the "warning signs". I go to auction sales alot....see crazy stuff all the time. Racer, you been around way more than me. If I had half your knowledge,...
  17. Re: Can anyone comment on vintage and HP of this engine?

Right.....but is it any good? It's been worked on by somebody who could be "mentally challenged".

    Re: 1969 Mercury 40 4hp recoil starter

Could be there is nothing in there but rust. Has it been sitting around long? Or is it a running motor? Milky lube would mean water....yes. I know you like to fix motors, so the aforementioned pre...

Re: 1969 Mercury 4hp jb welded cylinder

What's the rest of the motor look like? Lower unit? These driveshafts like to rust into seal area at water pump....causing water to enter the bearing, then gears. Don't think I'd want this motor up...
