    Against regs and plain old safety to use an automotive distributor in a boat.... in addition to the fact that the advance curves and sometimes the whole advance mechanism is different.

    Shorting the terminals at the sensor should cause gauge to peg full.... check for open wire at gauge first... or poor connections @ gauge next place to look.

    FWIW.... I'd start by pulling the plugs and inspecting the bores and see what shape they are in before I'd try turning over the engine... if decent, spray your fav magic potion in the bores and see...

    Looks like excessive resistance(drag) in the distributor's shaft. Time to consider a Delco EST kit.

    Some Merc drive systems have a mechanical switch feature that intentionally stalls the engine very briefly upon shifting. It's called the "shift interrupter". If misadjusted or worn ?????
