Re: 1999 2.5 hp Mercury at 67000 feet

That's interesting, no optional jets are listed for your engine. They identified the jet as a #86 so I guess it would be possible to find another jet but I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble. ...

Re: 1999 2.5 hp Mercury at 67000 feet

Without your engine serial no i can't give you numbers but when I looked up a random 1999 2.5 in the parts listings here in the carburetor section they list the jet sizes with standard being sea...
  3. Re: Electrical issue with 1986 Mariner 150HP Magnum

Glad it's fixed and thank you for letting us know how it turned out. As you saw, poor connections can look just fine and still be lousy (I say that mostly for the folks that read this later).
  4. Re: Electrical issue with 1986 Mariner 150HP Magnum

While bad grounds are a strong possibility don't forget the power side could be an issue also. Since they are high draw items I would start with the positive battery cable connector, like any...

    Re: crankshaft end play

Had to stop and throw this in, it is probably the combination of all of the above. I've been totally blown away by articles on what is involved in high performance engine building and even though...

    Re: crankshaft end play

That is quite possible but seeing how this one is laid out I thought it would be the case here. My shims have come in the mail, so it's time to get to work.

    Re: crankshaft end play

And as I think about it, when the pinion gear is loaded the driveshaft will go up to the extent of the free play which will push the crank a touch.

    Re: crankshaft end play

And, I'm taking a s.w.a.g. guess here, as the crankshaft tries to turn the driveshft it could ride up in the coupling.
    Ok Pappy is anyone right?

Re: Mercury 60 ELPT low oil pressure

I would want to put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it to see how much oil pressure you really have and that would include at rpm as well as idle. There should be a spec for higher rpm and a...

  11. Re: 1985 Mercury 90 HP (Inline 6 CYL) Knocking Hard Help Please (Video included)

If you don't see anything obvious up top go to a parts house and buy an inexpensive mechanics stethoscope and you may be able to figure out what area the noise is coming from which will help the...

    Re: crankshaft end play

Sounds as though it would be better to just shim both ends and be done with it since I have to order anyway.
    Thanks for the advice, Bob

    crankshaft end play

Perhaps one of you guys that build 2 strokes regularly might offer an opinion, I am finally building my 1999 14 hp and the crank end play is only .002 which is a lot too tight, do I have to shim both...

Re: 1999 2.5 hp Mercury at 67000 feet

Remember that your engine is likely jetted for 4000 ft and will be .002 smaller than std or sea level size and for your area you will need .004 smaller. On my engine (a 140 hp) there are three jets...

Re: 1999 2.5 hp Mercury at 67000 feet

Looking at the manual for my engine it says that from sea level to 2500 use standard jets, from 2500 to 5000 go .002 smaller and from 5000 to 7500 go .002 smaller than that soknowing what is std for...

Re: 1999 2.5 hp Mercury at 67000 feet

Did you buy the engine locally? Does it run well? It would run rich if it had low altitude jets and an old engine from the area should have been jetted properly already. Run down a shop manual, it...
  19. Re: 1995 115 fuel siphoning backwards when engine is off.

You don't say how the engine is performing but in the fuel department condition of rubber lines is important, they can degrade on the inside and cause issues.
  20. Re: 40 hp mercury 4 stroke outboard charging??

Since I am not that familiar with the wiring on that one I would recommend getting a factory service manual either from here or boat Info dot no and look up the wiring schematic for the charging...
