    Re: Engine not running right

Could be the tank pick up tube. A piece of debris might move over the tube when the fuel shifts.
  2. Re: Detroit Diesel Gray Marine model 371 transmission

    Try: https://www.surplusman.com/
They buy and sell used diesels and parts. Lots of Detroit stuff.
    Also, eBay.

    Re: 5L Mercruiser stops running

When it fails to crank, I'd check voltage at the solenoid. My guess is a bad contact, maybe in the ground leg. I'd clean all cable connections from the battery to the engine and solenoid.

    Re: 1990 smokercraft floor replacement

Some people just glass a new piece of close fitting plywood over the old. Most small boat builders do a good job on the hull and a poor fiberglassing job on the floors. If you pour expanding foam...

Re: Nasty black sediment in fuel filter

Probably from the tank. Organisms grow in the bottom of the tank below the fuel if there is any water. The black is their waste. It's acidic and will eventually eat holes in metal tanks. The solution...

Re: 12V71 Twin-Disc Gear Water in the Gear

Your friend should have the engines checked by a qualified mechanic with Detroit experience before buying the boat. Some Volvo or other brand mechanic isn't going to be useful. Rebuilding a 12v71 is...

    Re: my md5

A diesel needs fuel and heat (or enough compression to raise the air temp to above 500F). In cold weather an older engine may not have enough compression to raise the temperature inside the cylinder...

Re: Ford Sabre 2704 ET Spare Parts need

Try engine rebuilding companies. They have access to parts not always available to the public.
    Some parts on eBay.

    Re: 471 hydraulic govner

That governor was optimized for 1200 rpm. And there's no easy way to make it variable speed. It would be easier to put another governor on. eBay usually has someone parting out a Detroit. Also you...

Re: Volvo D12 675 overheating alarm at low speed

It could be the sensor. Since you have twins, trade the sensors and see if the problem moves.

Re: How prevalent are rotted out transoms

It's more common to have a rotted floor. It's usually under outdoor carpet. Out of sight, out of mind.

Re: Un-Related Submarine Diesel Engine Question

Many diesels engines before WWII had exposed rockers. They were manually oiled once an hour. These engines were slow turning with a maximum rpm of about 300. Atlas, Washington Diesel and others made...

Re: Anodes in exhaust manifold Perkins 4.107

To remove a rusty steel plug, nut, bolt, an impact wrench works much better than breaker bar, pipe wrench, etc. Often wrenching on a rusted bolt will twist the head off. Most rental stores have a...

    Re: Dead battery? wonk wonk

Gas or diesel engine? Bigger battery for diesel. Battery could have something on that discharged it completely. Probably no good, but you could try charging it. For starting a regular battery, for...

Re: Restore it or Junk it?

Even if it's free, you'll spend more than buying a boat ready to sail. I think it's a little small for around the world. I use to have a yard and picked up a few boats like this to keep my people...

    Re: Raw water pump frozen

The impeller is rubber, so if it was bonded to the housing, the vanes would tear off and allow the pump to turn. Most likely cause is frozen bearings. The pump has to be disassembled. Not too hard to...

Re: Low oil pressure at idle on 6.2

Could be the pressure relief valve, usually in the oil pump. Since these are remanufactured engines, could be an oil passage plug, removed for cleaning, wasn't reinstalled. 2 psi at idle on a...
  20. Re: Male Spade Connector on Boat Rocker Switchboard broke off, is there a fix?

It might be possible to take the switch apart and soldier wire or an extension. Sometimes there's an fuse/breaker for each switch and you can attach there (if you know what you're doing). Or you can...
