  1. Re: 1973 Johnson 25 hp starts but won't stay running

Okay, have you had it running without giving it a direct shot of fuel into the carb? Or will it only fire with a prime? Your quote: "It will start with a little squirt of gas but will not stay...
  2. Re: 1973 Johnson 25 hp starts but won't stay running

Okay....l remember that. There is no need to run two gaskets in there. If there is too much clearance for the standard donut gasket to work, then something is wrong with the float bowl....it is warped...

Re: 25 HP to 40 HP Tiller - Mounting Help

That motor can be clamped down with it's "thumbscrews". For me, since we put the motors away in the shed each fall, parking the boats outside, I never add more bolts for the mounting. Our 50 hp Merc,...
  4. Re: 1973 Johnson 25 hp starts but won't stay running

Hi, Racer. Glad your here to help. Bruce.....make sure that this port I've marked for you, is open and flowing uninterrupted to the float needle valve.
  5. Re: 1973 Johnson 25 hp starts but won't stay running

The compression is adequate. A real healthy....as brand new 22 cu in will show 120 to 130. I sell them right down to 90 psi. Buyers love em. This is perhaps the most powerful production outboard as...

Re: 25 HP to 40 HP Tiller - Mounting Help

Welcome. Good morning. What kind of motor is it? What year, and 2 or 4 stroke?
  7. Re: 1973 Johnson 25 hp starts but won't stay running

Welcome back. The main metering jet is located behind that screw plug....sometimes they are not opened to the correct size, or opened at all. This is removable with just the right size screwdriver....

    Re: ignition switch woes

Seems the fuse didn't blow soon enough. Make sure you have the correct amp fuse in there. I have seen people jam aluminum foil in there too. That kind of heat may have damaged the ignition switch...

Re: Is this a legit Evinrude engine?

Good to see it's running better. Make sure the orifices are fully opened up to correct size. If not, then the associated cylinder will run lean and cause problems. Use a welding tip cleaner and a...

Re: '71/'72 Model 110 Merc 9.8 Stator Coils

Yes, I drill out the insulators and install a sleeve. It is an improvement in the design....have permanently repaired many motors this way over the decades. Perhaps others may argue, but Mercury was...
  11. Re: what is most common cause for choke on older 9.9/15 not closing fully?

It seems the knob is correct. There is something messed up with the springs or butterfly itself. Without closing completely, yes....you will have hard cold starting.
  12. Re: Submerged 70ESL75E outboard motor (1975 Johnson 70) in freshwater

Right. Once exposed to oxygen, the trouble begins. Maybe that's why they call rust "oxidation". See this illustrated here with a steel nail.

    Re: Want problems? Use ethanol!

I'll advise others....they can take it or leave it. Been in this game a long long time. Your one sharp tech....don't think I wanna cross ya. Yes the carb must have been changed at one time.....guess...

Re: 85 merc flywheel what’s going on

May cause the upper cylinder to draw air through the seal. Depending on how many cylinders it has, you may get a "hickup" every so often at low idle, most often a single cyl. or a twin. The cylinder...
  15. Re: Submerged 70ESL75E outboard motor (1975 Johnson 70) in freshwater

Hi, welcome. How long has it been? If the solenoid contacts are "corroded" already, it has been more than 2 days. Water alone, in the solenoid will not normally cause symptoms like you mention....

Here you can even see it on the 3 hp Lightwin.
  17. Re: 1986 Merc 90 "Tower" bad unpredictable spark

No, that was in there. You know it's white/black. The packs are not oriented the same. The lower one goes upside down, so to speak. I had stator ground going to the white black. I'm getting careless....

    Pretty neat "Pete".
Power provided by vintage Merc "Tower".

    Re: Want problems? Use ethanol!

Not sure, but the resort here on Fish L. (Hi-Banks), just gave me the motor. It had a scored cylinder from broken top land on lower piston. I wouldn't recommend ethanol to my worst enemy. Ethanol is...
