  1. Re: Mercury Outboard 850 thrust washer behind reverse gear seems loose/too much play

Excellent. Thanks for your quick reply, and the good news.
  2. Re: Mercury Outboard 850 thrust washer behind reverse gear seems loose/too much play

I attempted to attach a picture, but I'm not sure if it worked
  3. Mercury Outboard 850 thrust washer behind reverse gear seems loose/too much play

Rebuilding my Merc 85hp's gearbox and the reverse gear thrust washer seems to have more play than 'normal'(?). I'm concerned that it won't hold the o-ring proud enough for a positive seal, since it...
  4. Re: '68 40hp Johnson Hydroelectric shifting strangely

Well that is good news! I'm very glad I asked, and thank you for the prompt responses. Fortunately while I was doing this testing I was rotating the shaft gently by hand so no harm done. Now I just...
  5. '68 40hp Johnson Hydroelectric shifting strangely

While testing the gearbox on a 68 Johnson electric shift I found that when I put 12v to on wire it would shift into fwd gear, 12v to the other wire put her in reverse, no voltage to either would give...
  6. Re: Firestone Scott Atwater 3.6 hp model 10a51 1949 water cooled? Impeller probs?

Update: the impeller is in fact in the gear case, which seems more appropriate. One very shot impeller right where it ought to be-- shoot.
So please disregard my last, problem solved. Thanks
  7. Firestone Scott Atwater 3.6 hp model 10a51 1949 water cooled? Impeller probs?

I just got a Atwater 3.6 motor from a bud's garage and was wondering if these things are water cooled. In vids I've seen similar models spitting water from the back center of the exhaust housing....
  8. Re: mid-70s? 6hp Johnson no spark bottom cyl. -- where to start?

Sure, compression was a bit on the low side also. 75/65, so not great but I think w/in the serviceable limit. I might just tell this dude to try and get his money back, this thing seems like a can o...
  9. Re: mid-70s? 6hp Johnson no spark bottom cyl. -- where to start?

6rL-72d, so I'm guessing 1972 then. I am using an open-air gap tester. Spark is white and strong on number one, but number two's giving me nothing.
  10. mid-70s? 6hp Johnson no spark bottom cyl. -- where to start?

I am working on a 6hp Johnson for a bud and right off the bat it has no spark on cyl 2 when pulled. I am used to working on larger, electric-start models. Where should I start here?
    Thank you
  11. Re: '93 Force 90hp Kill switch wire question (no spark)- black/yellow seems to be grounding somewher

I will look for it. Thank you.
  12. Re: '93 Force 90hp Kill switch wire question (no spark)- black/yellow seems to be grounding somewher

..so the switch box perhaps- or maybe the rectifier? Mercs are def not my specialty. Guidance on the next diagnostic step?
    Thanks
  13. '93 Force 90hp Kill switch wire question (no spark)- black/yellow seems to be grounding somewhere...

I've been trying to restore spark to my force 90. It sat for a year- ran fine when I stored it- now zero spark.
I ran some tests on the wiring and found that the black/yellow (from kill switch)...
  14. 85hp V4 1974 Johnson- new throttle cable, made some adjustments, trouble starting/running

So I think I might have gummed up the timing on my motor, or maybe the idle throttle- I don't know.
Three days ago she started up without any trouble, and ran like a top. Compression is perfect,...
  15. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

Alright, the job's done. Finally caved and popped that thing off. The flywheel came off much harder this time, was brutal. Ended up having to get a puller for the job.
Anyway, the key was fine and...
  16. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

I have considered this. The flywheel is tough to get off and I was hoping to make removing it a last resort, but at this point it might be worth the trouble. Think my neighbor has a socket large...
  17. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

Have been getting speed readings from my phone (speed box app) which seems very accurate, from testing in my car. I also have a conventional pitot tube actuated speedo in the boat, which is slightly...
  18. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

Alright, just got back from first test run with new/correct carbs. She did better but still seems substantially under-powered, making about 18 mph at WOT. Seems a 50hp should push a 15 ft boat a...
  19. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

Alright, carbs installed and engine is running stronger than it ever has before. The contrast is pretty stark bt the different carb types, not just in their performance on my engine, but in the way...
  20. Re: Years of work, engine won't run. Running out of options and about ready to sell.

You read my mind. Ordered the correct carbs online, they arrived yesterday. Putting them on tomorrow with fingers crossed.
Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know how it goes, which ought to...
