Re: 135 mariners twins both low on power

Have you checked the double bottom for water intrusion? Normally two engines will not have the same symptoms that points toward the hull? Do a survey of the deck and transom looking for dryrot.

Re: cavity plate 3" below hull.

Next question if you had to lift the short shaft up what is the reason is long shaft for? Unless you trying to increase draft at the stern for big water? A deep draft smoker craft makes for nice...

Re: cavity plate 3" below hull.

If your looking for fast get a 80s era 25XS merc and make it fit your transom!
  4. Re: bearings and seal replacement Johnson RL2576

Another trick is if a shaft has a groove cut in it from the old seal just dont press the new seal in all the way so it rides on a good part of the shaft surface.
  5. Re: bearings and seal replacement Johnson RL2576

Can you screw a couple sheet metal screws in the flat part of the seal and pry out on the screws?
  6. Re: BF90 goes into limp mode at full throttle like clockwork

Its never a bad idea to have a spare prop on hand. If sea trials go good do the WOT rpm test with a light load. Rule of thumb is 200rpm per 1 inch of pitch. If it reaches 6500 get a prop with three...

Re: Boat will not plane out

What is WOT rpm? If you get real high rpm you need to check clearance between the impeller and liner.
  8. Re: bearings and seal replacement Johnson RL2576

I only see one driveshaft bearing and a thrust washer for the pinion. Is there another roller bearing just above the brass bearing for the pinion?
  9. Re: bearings and seal replacement Johnson RL2576

A blind hole bearing puller may work for the upper roller bearing otherwise yes the flat bar and all thread method will do for the lower roller just be careful pulling the pinion you dont want to...

    Re: power pack test

Disconnect the kill wire at the pack. If that cure the issue you needto find the intermittent short. Be careful never apply battery pos to the kill wire it will cook the PP in a split second.
  11. Re: bearings and seal replacement Johnson RL2576

Keep an eye on craigslist for a good parts motor. Your issue is only gonna get worse. You may get lucky and find a motor not running with a good gearbox for cheap. This is the time of the year more...
  12. Re: BF90 goes into limp mode at full throttle like clockwork

There are too many factors that determine proper prop pitch. Use WOT rpm your model is between 5200and 6200rpm. Ideally you want around 5800 max with a light load. You can easily add three inches...
  13. Re: BF90 goes into limp mode at full throttle like clockwork

The BF90 is rated at 90hp at 5800rpm. If you keep running at 6500rpm just start saving now for a new powerhead or a different motor. Your beating that one to death. If you want faster get a bigger...
  14. Re: BF90 goes into limp mode at full throttle like clockwork

Your under propped if it goes over 6000rpm you can probably add three inches pitch safely.

Re: Volvo Penta DP 290 Problem. Need Help

The PDS coupler could be the source of the grinding noise you would need to pull the engine for that repair?

Re: Volvo Penta DP 290 Problem. Need Help

Do you shift into gear slow or fast? First off drain about half a quart of gearoil and then remove the shift mech from the upper gearbox. Is there metal shavings on the drain plug magnet? Inspect and...
  17. Re: 1971 Fastwin Gushing water out lower cowl.

I would give it a good decarb now its running good. Get a can of seafoam spray and after the engine is fully warmed up take it to fast idle speed and spray the seafoam in the carb until it starts...
  18. Re: 1971 Fastwin Gushing water out lower cowl.

If it is a new head gasket you should be OK 95psi is not that bad for rope start it should run just fine. Was there much carbon on the pistons.

Re: Help identifying 40 hp mercury

I put it as a 1991 year is not important unless your looking for a manual you use the serial number to look up parts.
  20. Re: 1971 Fastwin Gushing water out lower cowl.

Yea put some permatex aviation gasket maker in the recess then use a socket half the width of the welsch plug and gently tap it flat using the bolt side of the socket not the flat side. You may have...
