Re: help to identify my mercury

    Smart!

    Jeff

PS: IF Aussies drove on the right side of the road, I could live there. Neat people!

Bad high speed stator. Check the ohms on the red wire to ground.

Re: 20hp Merc purchased --battery thoughts

I use a regular lawn mower battery to start my 70 hp Mercs. No problem.

    Re: 4.5L 200hp winterizing

Iron plus moisture plus air equals rust.

Iron protected by anti freeze that excludes air prevents rust.

    Your choice.

  5. Re: 95 4.3 lx Alpha 1 gen 2 Y pipe swap. Extra 12 point bolt??!!

Reminds me of my slip neighbor who had the opposite problem with his Merc 4 cylinder 4 stroke OB. Pulled the manifold off, changed the gaskets, then was a bolt short putting it back on. I was a hero...

    Re: Mercruiser 4.3MPI oil leak

Is there a groove in the crank from the oil seal? If so, it will continue to leak. A Speedi-Sleeve over the crank fixes that; you can also space a new seal 1/8 inch further in or out so that it...

Re: help to identify my mercury

No offense to people, just unusual OBs made outside the States.

    PS: Aussies are still oddballs!
  8. Re: 40 mercury outboard control cable adjustments?

The clicking in F is normal, but your shifter is not centered properly in N. Readjust the shifter to get more R.

Re: 1983 3 cylinder 70 hp, trouble running

Aabsolutely. The red wire is the high speed stator coils, where the blue is the low speed. You need another stator. Sorry.

    Re: 2001 25HP No Spark

You need to check the voltage coming from the stator with a DVA meter (my new favorite tool). You can purchase (about 30 bucks on Amazon) an adapter for your meter.

The problem will jump out at...

    Re: 1978 40 hp mercury

Very few Mercs used the water cooled fuel pump (which destroyed most of the Merc triples out there--the impeller was too small to cool the top cylinders, that burnt up). Merc discontinued this dumb...

    Re: 1978 40 hp mercury

Disconnect and plug the water line going to the fuel pump--it's not necessary and cheats the power head of cooling water. Redo the hose coming from the top of the block and see if water shoots out. ...
  17. Re: '95 Mariner 75hp struggles to get above 3800rpm

Try a less pitch prop. Most marinas can lend you one.

  18. Re: '95 Mariner 75hp struggles to get above 3800rpm

I'd try a prop with a lot less pitch and see what happens. Load, a dirty bottom and other factors can really hurt a motor.
