Re: How bad is this? Bent lower unit

If it really bugs you get a qualified welder to cut it off and put it back straight. If it can't be done, the other two options are always there.

Re: 1978 500 blue band - clean carbs?

Max- Do yourself a huge favor and change the fuel lines on your motor if you haven't changed them recently. Mine (same motor) suffered disintegrating lines and clogged my carbs up with pieces of hose...
  3. Re: 1978 Mercury 500 thunderbolt - changed trigger, cleaned carbs - now revving up and down at idle

Mopar was like "being the only boy in Home Economics Class".
  4. Re: 1978 Mercury 500 thunderbolt - changed trigger, cleaned carbs - now revving up and down at idle

You should be good. The bottom of the pump housing has a seal installed in it. That seal wears out over time . Keep all your spares so You aren't grounded waiting for shipping to perform. Marine...
  5. Re: 1978 Mercury 500 thunderbolt - changed trigger, cleaned carbs - now revving up and down at idle

Sierra Part # 3323 is correct for my motor. Should be for yours also. That is a complete water pump kit.
  6. Re: 1978 Mercury 500 thunderbolt - changed trigger, cleaned carbs - now revving up and down at idle

I will ask a question before answering yours. Was your lower unit taking on water? If so, change that also. A waterpump for another motor is somewhat like comparing apples to oranges. Without clear...
  7. Re: 1978 Mercury 500 thunderbolt - changed trigger, cleaned carbs - now revving up and down at idle

Max- Take a look at Sierra part #3320. It has all the parts and should include what I think you are talking about. The lower half of the pump doesn't come out of the pump housing easily so at times I...
  8. Re: Is my Mercury ready for the scrap yard or will it live a little longer?

Thanks a whole lot for getting back. Always good to hear a success story.
  9. Re: Is my Mercury ready for the scrap yard or will it live a little longer?

I still needed to replace crumbling wiring and interior fuel lines before I solved that problem and yes I got a big boost in power from replacing the stator. Your compression seems too low but that...

    Re: 1978 500 trigger replacement

Been through this. The hard part is removing the flywheel. Get (or Borrow) a good puller. Put the parts new and old back where they belong and you shouldn't need to time or reset a thing. Just check...
  12. Re: No power at wot mercury thunderbolt 50hp

Chadster- I am going to assume you put 4 cycle oil in the motor in a pinch. (not 2 cycle as stated). This could be your problem as the fuel pumps are integral on both carbs. You may have to rebuild...
  13. Re: 1982 mariner 40EL lower unit bearing carrier removal question

I guess I can't say for sure but I'm reasonably sure it doesn't have anything else in the way. Don't use a ******** swing, use a hammer and nail swing. Doubt if that will damage anything. If that...
  14. Re: Mercury 35 HP, 2-cyl, Serial Number 0B342290 -Ignition parts replacement?

THill- I've had a "war" with my 77 also but found it best to search the net for a good price on new CDI parts. I have to keep telling myself that if I want a good motor that runs like a new one I can...
  15. Re: 1982 mariner 40EL lower unit bearing carrier removal question

If you have a large rubber mallet, you can give the unit some firm raps to get it out. A good OEM Manual shows the proper procedure. I have also placed a small slender and short wooden board against...
  16. Re: Mercury 500 Lower Unit/Gearcase replace

Those are series numbers for the lower unit you need. The 7 is just a bit later part number, You should make sure it is for a long shaft. (measure the drive shaft). I was bamfoozled for a time...

    Re: 40HP Propeller not turning

Did you remove and replace the lower unit prior to this?
  19. Re: 1982 Mercury 50 4 cylinder won’t start at idle

17802Hope that works. It didn't work. This is page 2. If not, you will have to flip it when you edit. I have tried to repost and it will not let me.
  20. Re: 1982 Mercury 50 4 cylinder won’t start at idle

17801Here is all from a Mercury manual just to compare yours to another. I will try to flip it.
