would overheating cause my 2006 yamaha 4hp 4 stroke to cut out at any stage.

"it spits water from the vent at startup. sonetimes stops, i restart and it spits again. looks like a thermostat opening and closing. is there a safety devise that cuts the engine if it overheats. its also very hard to start from cold. not hard as in tight ie partially seized."

if hard to start in cold: starter is connected with peculiar yamaha system. check if starter valve moves correctly
