i just picked up an older bayliner the omc numbers says that it is a 1987 with a 5.0 4v motor . I know nothing about boat motors but have been told that it is a small block chevy. just curious if someone knows anything about these

Ayuh,.... Sounds like a 305, 4 bbl. carbed motor,.....

Is the distributor in the front, or the back of the motor,..??

it is in the back. it says gm on the intake manifold. i looked up the OMC number and it says that it is discontinued and obsolete so i am just wondering if i can swap it out with maybe a 5.7

Ayuh,.... The long block motor is nothin' but a GM truck motor,....

It's everything that's bolted to it, the OMC stuff that's obsolete, discontinued, objects of history,....

My experience is that the GM 350 will bolt right in to the same brackets as the GM 305. If you do end up changing out that engine, do yourself a big favor and first replace the oil pan with either an aluminum one or a stainless steel one. The standard pans will rust out over time, especially in saltwater. That's from personal experience.
