1994 Johnson 60HP Water Pump

Just changed the water pump/impeller on my 60 HP Johnson. Hooked up the ears on the lower unit and ran engine. Water came out of the hose put not a lot just kinda spitted water out. Removed the Thermostat and more water came out but not a steady stream. Engine block was cool to the touch after running the engine for 10 minutes. Question, can I run the engine without the Thermostat all the time? I did order a new thermostat. Also there is a small hole in the front side of lower unit that water is coming out of. What is that?

Do not run without T-stat as it can overheat and water out of hole is from water pump drain

Water is supposed to drain out of that small hole.-----Do not run without thermostat.----Test run with boat in the lake.
