I recently had my engine rebuilt (5.7L chevy). I had them install HEI distributor in place of points style distributor. I have used the boat 3 times since then and twice the ignition control module has gone out leaving me stranded on lake waiting for a tow!! I thought electronic ignition would be more reliable. I didnt upgrade anything just a stock rebuild. There used to be a resistor used for the old distributor. That isnt there anymore. Do I need it? If not what else could be burning up the modules? If I do need one where does it go ? On one of the wires to module? Any help would be appreciated . Mechanic said I shouldnt need any resistor

a lot depends on what "HEI Distributor" was used...assuming the shop you used to perform the work is reputable, they should resolve the issue for no additional funds...unless they told you beforehand...
