454 Generation V upgrade

Is there anything you can do to make more power from the stock 300 hp engine ? I just pulled it out because it overheated. TIA, Andy

Yes,
That should discussed with an engine builder/machine shop.

To many opinions to be had here.

Obvious upgrades would be CAM, intake manifold and Carb recalibration. Improved heads.

but due to overheat you may need head work, timing chain replacement, etc.

There will be no real gains from exhaust upgrades unless you have thru hull and go to tuned headers.

It is not difficult to easily pass 400hp but it takes careful parts selection and a knowlegable engine builder who knows how to make power.

I get it,
Cam Shaft change would be the easiest to make gains.

Look up factory specs on your current cam and then look at mercs higher HP 454 engines and see what the differences are.
Or as I suggested, speak with an engine builder. They would be able to give you specifics and what parts may need to be changed to get the results you are looking for.
Also getting a Merc engine service manual would help.
It would list different engines, their parts and specs.

a lot will depend upon the hull the engine sits in...for the most part, you will want torque improvements vs top end HP gains...

You'll probably find that the speed-per-dollar return is REALLY small. That is, of course, if you change nothing else but the engine's output. In order to get significant gains in speed (I assume this is the goal) you'll need to look at everything...starting with the propeller, then the cargo, trim, and windage (structure above the waterline).
If you boost power 100 hp, you will need a different propeller for certain.
It's a matter of considering all the physics involved. Prepare to spend a lot of money on it tho.
