I have a 2005 25HP Yamaha 2 stroke I recently purchased. The motor runs great but the initial pull start is very tough to physically pull. After it has been running a few minutes, I will shut it off and pull start it again and it will be very smooth. I barely have to pull the rope. Anyone have any idea what would cause the initial pull to be so tough and have so much tension? It is night and day difference after it warms up.

Are ya runnin it in a barrel? If so make sure there is water over the water pump. Could be a dry impeller upon startup..

Get yourself a inexpensive compound bow and start at 50lbs and work up..

Does the same thing whether earmuffs are on it or sitting in the water at the ramp. I’m more concerned with the cord snapping off or breaking with all the force of the pull. I’ve had several other tiller pull start outboards and never had an issue like this.

Yes, this same issue has happened both at the ramp and with muffs on. It’s very strange. After that initial start up, you can pull it with two fingers the rest of the day and it’ll turn over just fine.
