Hi,
I just installed a new OEM Regulator/Rectifier (p/n 0585195) on my 1990 Evinrude 115 hp V4; and I was surprised to see that the voltage reading at the battery is as high as 15.28 while running at about 1000 rpms. Is this correct? I was expecting something more like 14.7 volts or so. Any help to confirm the specs or if this is normal or not is appreciated.
Thanks

That is far too high. You don't want it significantly more than 14.4.

Check that your meter is reading correctly.

Check the volts on the purple wire while the engine is running. Is should be the same as the battery volts.

I double checked my voltage with two different volt meters and both are consistent. I am currently getting 15.2 at the battery and 14.98 at the purple wire. The red wires on the engine read the same voltage as at the battery. I double checked the grounds on the battery and the engine and they seem solid, tight, and no corrosion. I havent had a chance to load test the battery as I need to take that somewhere to have it done, but battery is only about 6 months old and holds voltage with no issues. I will however double check the load test just to be sure. I still think that the regulator/rectifier should be holding max voltage below 15 volts, regardless of state of the battery. Am I wrong on that?

just to clarify, the above voltage readings were with the engine running. With engine off, prior to the testing, the battery voltage read 12.65 and after testing (above) battery reads 13.08.

Thanks all for your input so far. Update: I had the battery load tested and battery passed load test and some other tests they did on it, so battery is good. I tried to send a picture of the regulator/rectifier but cant get file size low enough to be processed here. But to confirm, this is a brand new OEM regulator/rectifier (from Evinrude/Johnson) (p/n 0585195) that I just put on to replace the old original one. With the old one, I was not getting this high of voltage....(it had other problems such as tach working intermittantly and irratic voltage readings, but nothing this high). To me everything seems to point to bad replacement part, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. (I did install the new one - one wire at a time, as I took the old ones off, to make sure I got the wires put back on properly.)
