Keep breaking rings...

Hey all,

I rebuilt my 1990 90hp 2 or 3 seasons ago, and broke a ring at the beginning of the second season on the overhaul. I rebuilt again, different pistons and rings. The thought was maybe I broke a ring on the install. Ran on the second rebuild for a season, and another ring broke in the fall...
Block was done the first time at machine shop, .030 over, heads decked, and I sent the block back the second time for them to check and hone.
Carbs completely rebuilt both times also, as well as water pump kits.
I went ahead and bought a really well maintained 1990 115 from a local dealer, ran it a bunch of times this summer, and noticed the last few times out it was a little hard to start cold. Pulled heads, and sure as s**t, a broken ring... (Dealer is taking care if the power head this one time for me luckily)
Both engines aren't using VRO, 50:1 mix. I only run 90 octane ethanol free, and use BRP xd 50 oil.
Boat has all newer fuel lines, and a Sierra water separator installed.
My question, I guess, is it possible for an issue with the boats fuel system or the separator to be causing this to happen? Engines are propped correctly, timed correctly, and running proper rpm. I check spark plugs constantly and they've never shown signs of running lean.
Boat is a Crestliner Phantom v175.

Thanks for any help or info.
