Can 05 Johnson 175hp binical control 011 Suzuki 175HP?

I’m concidering repowering from the 05 Johnson 175hp last of the carbuated 2 strokes.

To a 011 suzuki 175hp 4 stroke, this engine does’nt have a biniacal or control cables

Could it be possible I could reuse my johnsonsons binical an cables?

Iirc I’ve read on the net that this Johnson was actuely made by Suzuki w/ BRP as the manufactor.

Both engines have the same shape.

Doe’s this sound correct? Thanks for advice

The 2-stroke Johnson outboards that were manufactured through 2006 were mechanically identical to the carbureted Johnson/Evinrude engines from the 90's with a few cosmetic updates to the motor hoods and midsections. When BRP bought the OMC assets they continued to sell the carb'd 2-stroke engines under the Johnson brand for several years to keep up sales volumes of the 'tried & true' product line while they worked out problems of the FICHT direct injected technologies. In 2007 they ended the Johnson line of engines and only sold DI 2-strokes under the Evinrude brand. The 4-stroke Johnson's BRP offered in the early 2000's were just re-badged Suzuki outboards and those should have direct compatibility with any 'Zuke from that same era. I think the largest 4-stroke sold as a Johnson was a 70HP.

It may be possible to adapt your current OMC/BRP binnacle to the throttle and shift controls on the Suzuki 175 but my guess is the wiring harness is completely different. Most likely you should either get all the harness and controls with your purchase or find another source to get new or good used ones.

Well----that 175 carbureted was an OMC design first marketed in 1991 I believe.-----I had a 140 Johnson 4 stroke parts motor at one time.-----And they marketed a 200 HP 4 stroke as well.

Kevinj excellent infor as usalle, is my carbed 05 Johnson 175hp a fitch engine? I did fog the cylinders however since upsidedown world I haven't been boating for 4 year now. anyway i thought I mite repower to a 4 stroke mainly for fuel mileage this carbed Johnson is very thirsty.

I thought i read some stuff about the Johnsons of this era are really Suzukies but you are most likely correct the Johnson mechanically throttle & gear select cables mite work on a zuke, I was kindof hoping the wire harness could be swapped into the johnson binical end like the wire harness has it's own keyed ignition.
was hopping someone had already done this.

I realy want to elevate my outboard bracket 5" an have a XL shaft so
I'll proballey still repower w/ the suzuki but lower the HP to 140HP this engine is like 420LBs for XL shaft the 175HP an up to 250hp weight over 530LBs I also want a suzukie 20HP kicker I think there 120LBs so both engines will still be more transome weight than the single johnson.

more on that in another thread.

the repower will probely be brand new engine w/ drive by wire for throttle & gear select. I assume my sea star hydrolic steering cylinder ram will be reused?
I'm gonna be moving to Florida full time so plan to be on the water alot hoping for upsidedown world to end soon. thanks KevenJ

here's the none running zuke 140HP w/ cracked block I was concidering. then backed off when I found out it is siezed. something let go inside the engine to crack the block. the block itself appears like JB cold weld could seal the crack.anyway mite be more work than I'm capable of completeing. it's being sold cheap as a parts engine an I see used power heads available on e-bay https://www.ebay.com/itm/125522748951?_trkparms=amclksrc=ITM&aid=777008&algo=PERSONAL.TOPIC&ao=1&asc=257900&meid=51b1c5b3f91a4dbf8e782c0e71cad3c2&pid=101770&rk=1&rkt=1&itm=125522748951&pmt=1&noa=1&pg=4375194&algv=RecentlyViewedItemsV2&_trksid=p4375194.c101770.m146925&_trkparms=parentrq:3d0f31d418c0ad91b3d54582ffffd81c|pageci:351c4bde-93e3-11ee-a519-4616a3dbf80e|iid:1|vlpname:vlp_homepagefor around a grand like how hard can a power head swap be (which I havent done actuely havent done much boat engine work at all mainly work on car stuff). thanks racerone for advice.

Your Carb Johnson 175 is NOT a FICHT engine, and it's identical electrically to any carbureted FastStrike/Instruder 175 that was made from 1996 until 2006 and is mechanically the same back to 1991. In 1996 they introduced the System Check gauges which were the same from '96-'06.

Your SeaStar Hydraulic steering should work on the Suzuki engine just fine. It may take a slightly different mounting bracket, but that should be easy to get.

If I recall correctly you built a custom transom bracket to mount the Johnson 175 on your boat. You're probably right to look into the DF140 as it only weighs 410lbs, which is about identical to your current 175. The Suzuki DF175 weighs 530lbs, so unless that bracket is up to the additional weight, you'll probably want to go with the lighter outboard.

It's possible that the binacle control from your 2005 Johnson 175hp, if it's a Suzuki-made engine in collaboration with BRP, could be compatible with the 2011 Suzuki 175hp 4-stroke. Since both engines share a similar design, there's a chance that control cables may align. However, it's crucial to verify specific compatibility details and any potential modifications needed for a seamless fit. Consult the technical specifications and documentation for both engines, and consider reaching out to the manufacturers or authorized dealers for precise information. Additionally, marine professionals or technicians with experience in repowering projects can provide valuable insights into adapting the binacle control and cables for your specific upgrade. Your Carb Johnson 175 is NOT a FICHT engine thats a major relief I've been finding out about the fitchs exploding shooting enine shartnell everywhere I, and it's identical electrically to any carbureted FastStrike/Instruder 175 that was made from 1996 until 2006 and is mechanically the same back to 1991. Kevinj excellent infor as usalle yes I have a late 80s armstrong outboard transome bracket I refer to as a pod.

my pod has a drain (cutaway section) that is right at the waterline.cutawayp.jpg
firstSPLASH1.jpg
I have the right pod (w/ what I think) wrong size engine 20"L. so the pod is mounted to low for correct engine height if pod was elevated 5" it's out of waterline.

the transom is 46" I modified it bye cutting it down.this first splash image was the initial shakedown allmost 8 years ago.checking if I had the engine at correct height

I believe this pod is designed for only a 25"XL or 30"XXL shaft (this has been somewhat confirmed by manufacturer Armstronge. there offical response was weak." we don't recommend those late 80s pods w/ modern outboards". what a load of crappola there implieing there own product is crap (which established this market) but are new improved $4.K floatation pod is better.
IMO weak way to drum up business.

what I can't understand is why a sealed floatation pod has a screw in/out drain?

confussed on the floatation:
I know one cubic foot of floatation surports 60LBs. the Armstrong pod I like w/ dive platform weights like 80LBs. so is the builting floatation just to surport/compenstate the extra weight hanging off transome?

or doe's this floatation allow for a heaveier engine an the pod?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
problem:
w/ the 20"L when vessel is at rest the pods drain allows water into pod.
somehow the two lower though hull pod mount bolts seep water, an have gotten progressively worst over the years. now I have to leave my bilge1 w/ float switch on right when underway.

Planning some redundancy w/ a water level alarm just incase the float switch malfunctions, i do have a cover for the brace protecting the pumps.

she seeps behind my overkill knee brace (inbetween the transome an brace) the though hull bolts go though pod/outside skin/transome wood then pod.

before transome redo,I'm considering to whole saw around each (4), 1/2" though hull mount bolts then add a big washer covered in 5200. continue to use knee brace an current Johnson.

edit explaination: my ebay pod seller claimed hardware was included he only included a few bolts an only a couple where stainless. basically I used only 2 of these bolts to locate pod (can be sean in bilge image) at correct height then decided to use heavey duty 1/2 type bolts that normaley mount engine to transome.
2new pumps INSTALL2.jpg
I planning to redo the tramsome cutout will be 5"s higher an hope the drain is high enough away from waterline.

raise pod 5" an get correct size engine 25"XL in 140HP.

when I get to this point the decision will be is drive by wire worth the extra cost?
I believe the suzuki 140 basic starts at $8500 goes up to $13000, not sure how much engine I get for my $
I do know DBW isn't worth $4500. to me
thanks Guys for advice
thanks racerone for talking me out of the cracked block swapping power head idea.pod mounted.jpg

Seeping lower though hull bolts when I reglue I'll use west sys. G-flex2 expoxy best glue I've ever used.

my vessel doe's have a full outside aluminum floor marine plywood inside cabin.

having diffaculty editing bc of long thread.

seeping though hull bolts.jpg

what I'm currently attempting is to seal the pods drain, seal the pods sides an seal the lid I fabbed.
I added a 6" hatch to the new lid thought maybe I could rinse saltwater though the hatch by just filling pod.
but then pod will be full of water I could siphon out or add a brass bung fabbed into lower part of pod.

then just leave the pod alone an continue w/ Johnson 20"L. thanks for any suggestions on this new improved drain.
