    1996 Johnson 50hp Won't Start

The DIY tool Racer suggested works just fine, or you can buy an air gap spark tester like these listed below: Adjustable spark gap tester Inline spark gap tester

The rod threads in and out to achieve the correct height. The chart below is information I found elsewhere. The Youtube link below shows you how to make DIY measurement tool and where to measure from the LU mating surface to the shift rod eye. Youtube Video on Shift Rod Height Adjustment

    question about OMC outboard controls..

Sounds like your '93 motor has recessed mount controls. Those are nice because all harnesses and cables are hidden. You definitely need to have a working warning horn. Your '96 harness should have wires or a connector for a horn. If not your might have a cobbled together system at which point...

    1978 115hp Johnson Carburetor Rebuild

You can get nearly all the parts you would need for this engine right here at MarineEngine.com. I've ordered most of my Evinrude parts from here for many years and have always been satisfied with the quality, price, and quick shipping. 1978 115HP Parts List

    1988 Evinrude 15

Exactly. If the compression and spark test out fine it should start. You can also use a squirt bottle to shoot some pre-mix into the carb throat when diagnosing. If it will start when fuel is squirted in, but not on its own, then you likely have a plugged carb or a bad fuel pumps. Carb kits...

High RPM issues 2001 Johnson 150

I had a similar issue with my '96 Intruder 150, which is identical to yours. Most likely your problem is just fuel delivery. Did you diagnose all those electrical components and determine they needed replaced, or did you install parts trying to track down the problem? In my situation I found...

Having problems with my forward gear on full throttle.

My experience has been if a clutch dog is not fully engaging it is a loud clunk when gears slip and re-engage. Is this a tiller model or remote controls? On the engine side I would thoroughly clean and lubricate all shift linkage components. Next, try operating the shift rod by hand without...

    Ready for a roasting

Quick solutions are nice. FYI, its best to include the model # in future posts. Just giving the year and number of cylinders doesn't provide quite enough information when assisting with troubleshooting.

Engine sitting for many years. What to check?

Non-ethanol fuel, not necessarily higher octane.. Typically non-ethanol is the premium fuel at many gas stations so by default is higher octane.

    Plugs and gas

Always Champions plugs in my Evinrude engines and Faztbullet gave you the right plug # for your engine. I also exclusively run non-ethanol fuel in all watercraft. Brand doesn't matter to me as long as it's certified 100% gas.

Grease for assembling new pistons on to old rods/needle bearings..

Oh boy, now you're going down a rabbit hole! You can sometimes find a real gem and you can also find a pile of scrap. There are plenty of situations where the internals are fine, it's just the owner can't (or won't) repair simple fuel or ignition problems so they just give up and sell the...

    1996 Evinrude keeps shutting off

You have a fuel delivery problem. This could be an air leak in the lines, a sticking anti-siphon valve in the tank, a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump, or an issue with one or both carbs. Also, "choking" on this engine does not exist, instead there is a primer solenoid that squirts fuel in...

Idle and timing adjustment 1992 Evinrude 88 hp

Is that 1500RPM out of the water on muffs or in the water? Without any back pressure, 1500RPM on a set of hose muffs isn't too far out of line. Another possible explanation is you have an air leak somewhere and it's allowing one or more cylinders to run lean. Also, do a link and sync on the...
