The hole in discussion is the flywheel housing vent, nothing should come out of it
Full tear down and inspection is the only option without guess work
The fact that it starts on reverse means your linksge is fine. The cross pin in the dog clutch has broken leaving it in reverse.
Do a pressure and vacuum check on it.
