Want more performance out of a Volvo 30 135 hp motor

" Just bought a 1997 Regal with a Volvo 3.0 135hp carburated engine. Anyone have an idea of fairly inexpensive ways to improve the performance of this engine in hp and/or mph. Props are one item, I know. Thanks, Mike "

Fresh oil and filter, clean & tuned carb, fresh plugs (properly gapped) and wires, check the timing curve with an adjustable timing light, lube the distributor advance weights (if so equipped), clean the flame arrester, make sure the engine area is well ventilated.

A prop in good shape vs. a battered one will help, but just changing the size will not necessarily improve performance. It just "gears" the engine differently, and is always a trade-off.

Fresh gear/tranny lube helps, as does a clean bottom and proper weight distribution.
