Suzuki dt4 runs good but doesnbt go into gear

" I just picked up a Suzuki dt4, don't know the year exactly. I put it in the water, cranks fine. Shifted into forward, and run for a few minutes. Killed motor, and now, will still crank but not shift to forward or reverse. This was my first time to use motor since purchase. What are possible problems. "

on the lower unit there is a inspection hole rubber covering it see if rod is slipping, i have a manual
that i could send copy"
