Any suggestions on how I could get an old diesel engine inexpensively for a father / son learning project. I'm surrounded by water - Detroit MI.

Go to a boat yard or diesel engine shop and sometimes they have running takeouts that are just too worn to rebuild. An add in a local trade journal may help or hit the waterfront and spread word that you need a beater engine for a father/son project. Hats off to you for being interested enough to spend time with him. If there were more of that there would probably be less of the negative stuff we hear about youth today. Kim
