I've heard

"Hello all,

I've heard some people say that they prefer Penzoil Gear meth in their lower unit over the high preformance synthetic stuff you get at the boat shop.

I personally am a big fan of penzoil gearmesh - but thats in my cars and truck.

The marine requirements are a little different but if the case is sealed i can't imagine it would be that bad, the thing is very similar to a axle differential.

"Mark, you can use most any brand you like as long as it is listed for Marine use.

Your motors lower unit is not like that on a vehicle and normal automotive gear oil expands and foams (something marine oil doesn't do).

Using automotive gear oil is however an excellent way to remove every seal from your lower unit - it expands and blows them right out quite nicely
