Exhaust flapper

If their is no exhaust flapper

If their is no exhaust flapper om my 1980 470 170 hp inline 4 cyl would it huet anything or make the enginr over heat???

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

"You need it to keep backwash

"You need it to keep backwash from entering the exhaust and then the engine. If it is not there upon inspection, it probably fell down into the iron pipe and you now have a restricted exhaust which will cause an overheat condition since the exhaust can't get out of the engine fast enough."
