I've an 89 Slickcraft 279

I've an 89 Slickcraft 279 with a 2003 496MAG (200 hours) that has started 'popping' at 3000~3500rpm. Could this be the shutters rattling or water in the fuel? I've changed the fuel filter and still it pops/backfires(?) at that rpm range. What are the thoughts out there? Thanks in advance for any help.

"A defective voltage regulator will cause backfiring if the voltage goes too high, like 16 or so. Happened to me. JW in Dixie"
