I'm going to be replacing the points on my buddy's 1986 Merc 170 and was wondering what the total timing figure is?

Total timing????
I'm sure you mean the timing at idle. I have an '83 470. I set mine at 8 degrees BTDC. I heard Merc. put out a bullitan saying to lower it to 4. I read most go with 8. Runs good for me.
