Alan...two stroke outboards normally have the spark fire just before TDC for a proper burn of fuel across the piston face. Your timing should be set properly to insure this. The motor (going by the year you supplied) should be a Yamaha built outboard for mariner...PS I'm curious why you should ask this?...DJ
