98 merc what year and what to do about leakage

" just bought this motor, i ra

" just bought this motor, i ran it in a tank and it runs fine
i dropped the lower unit and what a mess (milky brown)(black gritty)
the local dealer wants me to bring it in to do a presure test
my questions are:
#1 should i let him do the repairs or should i try and do this myself
#2 what am i loking at to rebuild the lower unit
#2 could someone please tell me the year of this motor sn# 6517596 "
 
Looks like you have a 1984 9.

Looks like you have a 1984 9.8 Mercury. The lower unit is a simple setup. The most important thing to remember is to get a repair manual and take your time.

Tim...Before you take it to the dealer is your gear oil clean or milky. You could posibly have a water jacket or base gasket leaking into the exhaust which will cause this problem...DJ
