" during overhaul of this engine, the engine was set with piston one and six at top dead center and it was timed at this position, then the valves was set with number one cylinder first, followed by number five cylinder, followed by number three cylinder, followed by number six cylinder, followed by number two cylinder and lastly number four, after all the settings the engine was turned manually but when feeler gauges were used to recheck the clearance of the valves some were very tight and some lost there former settings.(clearance 15-30mm). please is this the standard for setting a four stroke six cylinder engine if am wrong pls explain the standard procedure. " Hi Charlieindia
153624 is the most common firing order but some diesel engines are different. eg Toyota 2H =142635
Assuming your engine is 153624 with no.1 rocking
(valves between the exhaust and intake stroke) No.6 clearances are adjusted. Turn the engine until 5&2 are at TDC. 5 will be rocking, adjust 2 ete ete. Get the pattern 1=ad.6 5=ad.2 3=ad4 6=ad1 2=ad5 4=ad3. with the Toyota example. 1 rocking adjust 6. 4=ad3 2=ad5 6=ad1 3=ad4 5=ad2
To check which cylinder is rocking when a given two pistons are at TDC turn the engine back and forward 10deg. and the rockers will be seen to move up and down slightly. Hope this helps "
