Cobra Propshaft Replacement Remove drive

I severly banged up my prop an

I severly banged up my prop and bent the propshaft this weekend. I have located all the parts and they should be here this week. My question is do I have to remove the entire drive from the transom in order to seperate the upper from the lower? I have the service manual but it shows the drive already removed ready for bench work. This is for a 1989 5.7 Cobra. Thanks.
 
Yes you must remove the entire

Yes you must remove the entire drive before trying to separate the upper/lower. The reason is the shift rod is in the way and you will damage it. Once the drive is off you can turn the shift rod 90 deg to get it out of the way.
