"I have 98 Merc 4.3. I have for the past 8 years winterized it by removing the 4 plugs and draining water. This spring, after starting it I find water in oil. Obviously, I suspect a cracked block. Could it be anything else."

"Could be a bad head gasket, or a leaky exhaust manifold to riser/elbow gasket allowing water to run down into a cylinder when shut down.
It sounds like you drained the water correctly, assuming you got good water flow out of all 4 plugs. That's one on each side of the block low near the oilpan, and one at the bottom of each exhaust manifold, right?"

"Stan;
Just had a thought; you only have one water outlet hose from the T'stat housing going to each exhaust manifold, right? If there is a second hose going to the risers, then the risers would need to be drained separately. If not drained, they could have frozen and are now letting water run into your engine through the exhaust valves.
