"I have an older alpha outdrive. 5.0L

The outdrive suddenly started to make a clunking noise when engaged in forward. When engaged in reverse, the noise isn't there initially, but starts shortly after being engaged (30sec-90sec). It seems to be less loud with the outdrive trimmed up. Turning the outdrive has no apparent effect.

At 1000rpm, it sounds like two clunks per second.

When spinning the prop by hand, the sound is much weaker, but present. If you gently pull on the prop and spin it, the noise is gone.

Thoughts??

Thanks"

My immediate thought is that it could be a collapsed front bearing or broken teeth on the pinion gear or crown gear or perhaps all three.

I'd start by draining the oil and checking it for metal fragments.

First check the drive lube.
If that's OK, it could be your U joints. Less likely but possible is your gimbal bearing. The latter two will require the drive to be removed to check. Not difficult to do.
Have you greased your gimbal bearing lately?
