"I HAVE A MERCRUISER 140 WITH ALFA1 OUTDRIVE,LAST YEAR THE GEAR SLECTION WENT VERY STIFF,STIPPED GEARBOX OUT FOUND NOTHING STIFF OR SEIZED,LUBRICATED EVERYTHING AND REASEMBLED,NOW OCCASIONALLY IT GOES STIFF(THE GEAR SELECTION) BUT SEEMS TO FREE OFF,HAVE CHECKED ALL CABLES AND THE CONTROLS AND THEY ARE ALL FREE,ANY SUGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED"

"Before changing the shift cable, disconnect it from the shifter and see if it will move easily thru all gears. Replace it if it hesitates or is hard to move it by hand.

If it moves freely, the problem is in the shifter. Most likely there is some old and hardened grease full of dirt that needs to be cleaned and replaced with 2-4-C grease. The detent settings may be to tight and not allowing the detent ball to move freely.

Get a manual if you take it apart or you will be adding some new swear words to Webster's Dictionary. Ball bearings and springs will take flight and you will break the neutral safety switch if reassembled wrong--BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!!!
