Rebuilt 90 hp flathead overheated when water pump quit working. Smelled burning paint and shut her down. The tallest portion of the head is discolored from the heat. After cooldown and restarting the motor runs fine but still no water.I don't mind buying a new pump but how do I tell if I damaged the motor. Should I remove the head to see if the heat warped it? I have a spare head gasket. Any thoughts? Thanks.

"Jim, even though flat cylinder heads are relatively easy to pull and check for warpage, I would continue to run the engine with fresh oil, new plugs and the new water pump while watching closely for excessive steam, water in the oil and vice versa, or a performance drop.

A compression check or a leak-down test would also be a good idea. If the engine doesn't exhibit any of these problems, pull the plugs after an hour or so of running and make sure they all look good.
