Need help removing steering cable from sterndrive

"my steering cable hooks to sterndrive and it has a rod running through it to a gear in the upper unit.when i separated the outdrive from the bellhousing the steering cable assembly would not come loose, that is the only thing holding me up from installing my transom seal please help me out with some advice. someone posted that the steering did not have anything to do with the outdrive coming off, I may not be taking the outdrive off the right way but it is the easiest way i can see i took the 13 or so small nuts off of the back of the bellhousing and the shaft with the splines that goes in the flywheel came out of the bellhousing"

"you don't even need to remove the drive to replace the gasket. slip it over. sounds like you are trying to remove intermediate with drive. no. gasket is clamped to the intermed. housing. put nuts/bolts back in. remove gasket from transom, and pull back to reveal clamp inside boat. and by the way, buy a book!"
