"Having a bit of a fuel problem. Here's what I've done so far.
New plugs, new carb kit, all new o-rings, gaskets, and new diaphragm for the accelerator pump. The gas has been sitting for about a year, so I topped off with 16 gallons of 93 octane, plus a bottle of octane boost. I have verified fuel flow from the tank, to the pump, from the pump up into the carb, but from there, it seems like nothing is happening. I cannot see a jet of fuel going in when operating the throttle, or when manually operating the accelerator pump. It will run off of starting fluid, until it burns off. As of last night, if I dump a cap full of fuel into the carb, it will crank up and run as long as I am hammering on the throttle, back and forth, really fast, but it is running like crap. The only thing left is maybe not enough pressure from the fuel pump?? I know the pump is working, but is there supposed to be a certain amount of pressure that it pushes? Or could it just be that the gas is to bad?
I hope I've included enough info to get some assistance on this. Oh, it's an 86 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3L and Solex one bbl carb."

"Hi,

Have you verified that

"Hi,

Have you verified that the fuel fine filter (part 38 in the link) is clean?

When you operate the throttle, you should see fuel squirting through nozzle 8. If you don't, either there is no fuel in the carb bowl, or the accelerator pump is either defective or incorrectly adjusted/assembled.

Consider getting hold of a copy of the Seloc manual for your engine, it describes in detail how to overhaul and set your model of carb.

Also, the fuel pump pressure should be between 2 and 4 psi.

If you suspect the quality of the gas as the source of the problem, you can disconnect (and plug) the fuel suction line from the fuel pump and hook up another line from a jerrycan with fresh fuel, then test and see what happens."

"That would be a no on nozzle

"That would be a no on nozzle 8, no fuel coming through there.

I have not taken the carb down that far to get to 38, as I did not really want to fool with the throttle assembly if I didn't have to, but if that is where the filter is, that's a good idea.

I do have the Seloc manual already, and have read and re-read on this, that's how I knew how to take the carb apart and clean it all and reassemble.

My plan for tonight was to run it out of a 5 gallon fuel can and see if it did any better. Looks like I will also be looking at that filter. Thanks for the info, if anything else comes to mind, let me know."

"Thanks! El Pescador, part 38

"Thanks! El Pescador, part 38 did the trick, I don't know how I missed that with as many times as I've torn the carb down already. Cleaned it up, cranked right up. BUT (yeah, there's always a but), looks like the fuel pump isn't doing it's job. If I keep feathering the throttle, it'll keep running, but if I stop, the engine stops, also, I can stop flow at the end of the line with my finger, and when putting it on a gauge, it didn't register anything, so it appears to be faulty.

On a side note, I think I have air coming in the water line. I put a clear hose between where the line comes in from the back and goes into the impeller, and I am seeing air bubbles in that clear line. Where would I want to start to trace down the air leak?"

"Thanks again, I think that mi

"Thanks again, I think that might be it. One question though. The part you sent the link for shows 3 bolt holes on either side. Mine only has 1. Is that the right one? The part I pulled off has what I believe to be 851786 marked on it. I might be a bit off with the numbers. In any case, here are 3 pics of what I pulled off, hope it helps. By the way, you have been a world of help El Pescador, I truly appreciate it.

"That part will fit, just use

"That part will fit, just use the two middle holes. Alternatively you can get this other one, but it's more expensive. Your call.

Whichever model of connector you install, coat the surface where the hose fits with "Perfect Seal" or "Loctite Gasket Sealant" or similar, as well as the bolt threads and the gasket. The connector will last longer and the bolts will be easier to remover "next time".

BTW, you are welcome. "

"As long as it works, I'm

"As long as it works, I'm good with the other one for less money. I think I can get the Loctite here at any auto parts store."
