"Have just purchased a 14'

"Have just purchased a 14'6" centre console glass boat with a 70HP Evinrude. The engine number is 70979R which, I believe, is a 1979 model. The prop is not real good and I'm looking for suggestions as to what props are around. The boat is for fishing and has a deep vee hull.

"13 1/4 X 17 is a very common prop for the Johnson/Evinrude 3 cylinder 70HP motor. If your boat runs a little heavy or you need more oomph on the low end you may find that a 13.75 X 15 prop will do well. The only real way to tell what will work best is a tachometer.

These engines work best in the 5,000 to 5,500 RPM range. You need to have the boat with a typical load of equipment and people and then take it out for a test run with each prop. The correct prop will allow you to hit 5,500RPM at WOT.

Just so you know, these motors have very little giddy-up in low RPM. They don't make any appreciable power until about 3,500 RPM. Aside from that they are great engines. They'll run forever and are pretty easy on fuel. Plus, they are extremely reliable.
