96 200hp johnson loses cylinders at any giving time sometimes stalls then you have to rev it up to clear it out and it can be ok all day. losses power like 3 cylinders stop working. hot cold 6mph or 40mph. when ever it feels like it

"I can't tell you how to diagnose this, but I believe those big V-6's had an electric cutout switch in the throttle. The idea was it would momentarily cut power to 1/2 the cylinders when shifting between Forward-Neutral-Reverse. This was to reduce the amount of torque applied to the clutch dog and gears as parts were moving in the lower unit. My thinking is that you might have a short in that circuit that is causing you to lose cylinders.

You should also do the routine stuff: Check compression, check spark, inspect timer base for goo which would indicate a bad stator.
