"Finished the rebuild of the 2 solex carbs last night and reinstalled today. After 1/2 hr of wondering why it wouldn't start I opened the valve on the gas line that I had closed last week and it started right up! I was happy to discover that she will start fairly easily without a choke,I was a little skeptical. It now runs well and once the carb synchronize tool arrives and I get them set a little better this will be one sweet running engine!! Thanks to everyone for all the help.
I also replaced the thermostat but no difference. The temp of the coolant in the exp. tank is 180 deg F. Is this a proper place to check and is 180 deg. there ok? Exhaust manifold and exhaust stay nice and cool.
Now, new topic. Should I be worried that the stuffing box is 27 years old? Will the packing last this long(the boat was only used a few seasons and has 40 hr. run time)? I want to get everything right before we launch as I do not have a trailer and cannot easily pull back out if something is wrong.
