" I recently purchased a Johnson 90HP outboard. The seller told me that he thought it was an 1986 or 1988. He wasn't sure. The label is scratched and I can see part of the model number. J90TL_ _ R. The two blank spaces is where the scratch is. They are either a ED, EO, CD or CO. I believe the first of the two letters is an E. Can I tell by the serial number? The serial number is G3846425. Does anyone know how to get the year by the serial number? Thanks. "
 
"Look on top of the powerhead

"Look on top of the powerhead on the port (left) side near the head gasket area. There may be a core plug there (looks like a quarter size freeze out plug) that should also have the model number on it. If it's there, how does it read?

For the record... ED=1996, EO=1995, CD=1986, CO=1985.
