1988 merc 100 hp spark plug problem

" I'm the fed up wife - husband left the motor out without winterizing for 3 years. Replaced spark plugs, put fresh gas in, checked fuses. Engine cranks but won't turn over - no spark. Any suggestions? Does anyone have a picture of what this engine is supposed to look like - maybe we're missing something...Please answer - his life depends on it!

"Kathy.... If the engine cranks, I assume it is turning over (rotating) but will not fire (start).

Any engine that has been left sitting for three (3) years would have fouled, gummed carburetor.

I'm thinking that perhaps you're assuming that there is no fire/spark/ignition simply because the engine won't start. Double check the spark with the s/plugs out.

With the key ON, plugs OUT, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame. If you have this type spark, clean and rebuild the carbs.
