"Mark.... OMC's code is the word INTRODUCES whereas each letter represents a number ie I=1, N=2, T=3, etc.

The "ES" within your model number indicates that your engine is indeed a 1990 88hp Johnson. I double checked my parts books and the 1990 88hp is listed.
