How does one test the stern d

How does one test the stern drive waterpump on an OMC 250 (1973)to see if it is still working properly?
 
While the boat is in the wate

While the boat is in the water disconnect the hose that connects from the starboard side of the intermediate housing at the rear of the engine to the water coupling/thermostat housing at the front of the engine. If water starts spewing everywhere it works.
