I have recently discovered that my flapper valves have burned away. Is it essentiall that they be replaced? I know the purpose is to keep water out but I understand that new engines do not use them. Can anyone help with own experience or your suggestions?

" Actually there was a notice sent out by Volvo Penta, maker of many Y pipes used by all engine manufactures, that suggested removing the flappers. Volvo claims the valves can cause water intrusion into the exhaust. If you got them they say remove them. I did on my twin V6's and have had no problems. "
