" I am new to this forum, so I hope I am doing this right. This engine is not fuel
injected, it has electronic ignition. The problem is when the engine is at 3000
rpm's, the regular speed that it has been used for about ten years with no
problems. it is now surging: slows down and then picks up. All the things that
one might think would cause this has been checked with no results. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

" What kind of electronic ignition? I dont remember the 89 cobra available with electronic.
There are many causes:
-Change spark plugs and wires.
-check if one or more sp. plugs are not firing.
-check riser gaskets to make sure some water is not getting into some of the cylinders as engine will still run and burn the water and fuel. (how old are the manifolds and risers and is it possible that the riser gasket is damaged.
-Try disconnecting the tachometer wire (grey) from the negative side of the coil - if the tach is acting up it will cause misfiring.
-Check connection at harness plug and key switch.
-If in doubt about the harness, start the engine and connect a wire from the battery + side to the plus side of the coil.(Do not leave it hooked up for long when engine is not running)
