" I recently purchased a 1973 40hp Mercury. The motor ran great while testing it on the hose. I put in the water today and moved about slowly for about ten minutes, then the motor stalled. I got it to restart, but it was running very poorly, missing, and would not idle. I do not have a manual yet for this motor and would greatly appreciate any ideas you might have on this problem. "

" 1995 Force 40 hp engine. I have a problem with my engine it will crank and run fine when cold but will not idle when it gets warm. Also it seems that it will only throttle up to maybe 1/2 throttle. I can push it to full throttle, it will just kinda miss and hesitate. I used it saturday and it pretty much ok but it had a little miss in it. Sunday it would not hardly throttle up, and then miss and hesitate.Thanks in advance for help you can give on this.

When you commission a used mo

When you commission a used motor the first thing is to install a new impeller and do a compression test.Running a motor on a hose is not a check on the CONDITION of a motor. If the motor has been sitting for a long time with fuel in the carburetor it is likely in need of cleaning.
