Gimble bearing replacement

Whats the proper method to change the gimble bearing?

I'm going to order a jaw puller (slide hammer).

Do I need any special tools to put the bearing back in?

The clymer manual isn't very helpful...

Can I do it with the gimble housing/transom piece still on it?

I had a hole in the bellows and the bearing has a bit of surface rust so I'd rather just replace it now.

The slide hammer I got isn't going to work well...

Anyone have any other suggestions on tools to use to get the old bearing and carrier out?

"Assuming this is to an OMC co

"Assuming this is to an OMC cobra transom assembly and the pivot housing is off the boat apply heat to the immediate area. After a few moments hit it with a drift pin, in different locations, and the gimble brg will walk out easily. Same for the inner seal.

Otherwise, still applying heat a 3-jaw setup can be rented from an OMC service shop for removal. the gimble comes out easily. If not, you're doing something wrong."

"I bought a bigger slide hamme

"I bought a bigger slide hammer. 5-6 good whacks with it and the bearing came right out.

However, I pinched and ripped the drive shaft oil seal while doing it, so I just ordered a new one. Hopefully it will be here soon.

Half of the job is done, now to get the new one back in!"
