"I have a 1997 Volvo 4.3 GL and have had starter bolts break the last two years. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I'm not very machanically inclined, but my starter seems to torque very hard when it hits. I would like to prevent this from happening again. Any ideas would be appriciated!!"
 
"Start by checking the timing.

"Start by checking the timing. If it's too far advanced it will put much strain on the starter. Also any water getting into a cylinder can have the same effect,it doesn't take much. I even saw one guy had dual batteries and hooked them up in series which gave him 24 volts.That ruined more than just his starter bolts though.Make sure all your batt cables are clean and tight as well as the starter bolts . Loose bolts can let the starter bang against them if not torqued properly."

"Thanks, I'll check the bolts and cables, but I don't know how to check the timing or check for water in a cylinder. I guess I can have a pro check that out."
