what is the centrifugal slinge

what is the centrifugal slinger on an alpha one lower unit above the water pump housing on the driveshaft... what does it do...what does it look like... is this the round foam rubber type thing that goes around the driveshaft there... if so i have always put this in the top of the upper pump housing until i just seen this thing in my book mentioned above the pump housing need to figure it out quick so i can get my lower unit correctly back on

"It's not a 'slinger', it's the seal between the pump housing and the vertical shaft. It's to keep the exhaust on the outside of the housing from vapor binding the pump impeller.
The impeller kit comes with a little plastic circular 'tool' for properly seating it."
